Boasting electric pace - he won the Donald Gift footrace in 1934 - and strong overhead, Gordon Jones gave Melbourne fine service in 61 VFL games during which he kicked two goals from 1935 to 1940. After struggling to maintain his place in the seniors early in his career he thrived after being shifted from the ruck to centre half back, which was where he lined up in the victorious grand finals of 1939 against Collingwood and 1940 against Richmond. Having joined the army Jones was prevented from playing again during the war years and he chose not to resume after the conflict ended.

A career highlight was representing Victoria in 1938 against South Australia and Western Australia.
