Invariably known as 'Harry', Essendon's Herbert Wright was in the top echelon as a centreman during the club's final years in the VFA and its first seven in the VFL. He commenced with the Same Old in 1894, a premiership year, and was also heavily instrumental in the 1897 and 1901 premiership victories. Fleet of foot, and boasting excellent ball handling skills, he was twice chosen to represent the VFL against combinations from the Ballarat competition. Wright was also a fine cricketer, representing Victoria.
