Known as ‘Bluey’ because of his thick thatch of red hair, Carlton’s Avenel recruit Ian Shelton was a fine servant of the Essendon Football Club between 1959 and 1963 and in 1965, during which he played 91 VFL games and kicked two goals. He missed the entire 1964 season with a serious eye injury. Centre half back in the winning grand finals of 1962 against Carlton and 1965 against St Kilda Shelton, who played in the latter match whilst nursing a painful shoulder injury, went on to coach local and country teams.
