After playing four games for South Melbourne in 1941 Jack Dempsey did not appear again until 1944 because of the demands of his army service. He continued with South until 1947, by which time he had played 45 VFL games and scored a dozen goals. In the infamous ‘Bloodbath’ grand final of 1945 against Carlton he played as a follower and was high among his team’s best players. However, he could not prevent the southerners from slumping to defeat by 28 points.
