Words and phrases like ‘canny’, ‘shrewd’ and ‘cool as a cucumber’ probably sum up South Melbourne utility Jim Cameron’s general demeanour and approach to the game as adequately as any. Never one to adhere strictly to the laws of the game if circumventing them might be in his team’s interest, he was a key member of the South team which downed Carlton by two points in the 1909 premiership decider, giving the club its first VFL flag. He was also one of the very best players afield. Two years earlier he had played in a losing grand final, also against Carlton.
