Having joined the club at the beginning of 1943, Jim Ryan was promoted from Melbourne's reserves side to play his one and only senior VFL match in round 16 of 1944.¹ The day prior, the Melbourne Age described Ryan as "a former Xavler College rover who has been playing well with the Seconds. He will open up in a forward pocket and then be No. 2. rover."
Ryan appears to have had little impact. The Demons were thrashed by St Kilda and Ryan was not mentioned in newspaper reports of the match. He was presumably dropped the following week, and became yet another member of the V/AFL's 'one game' club.
