Carlton’s John Brown was an old style defender who, despite lacking pace, stuck to his direct opponent like glue, and rarely ventured beyond centre. Over the course of his 90 game VFL career he not only failed to register a single major score he never even had a set shot at goal. His career spanned the years 1950 to 1955, an unusually bleak period for the Blues, who only once qualified for the finals, finishing fourth in 1952.
John Brown’s father Ted and older brother Vin were both dual premiership players with Carlton.
