Solid as he was as a defender John Reid struggled to get a game both at his original league club Melbourne, and during his first couple of years at Footscray. With the Demons he played just one game in 1972, no games at all in 1973, and two games in 1974. In both of his first couple of seasons with the Bulldogs he made just a single appearance, but from 1977 until 1981 he blossomed into a fine contributor. After playing 78 VFL games and scoring two goals for Footscray Reid rounded off his career with ten games and two goals for Swans/Sydney Swans in 1982-3.
