Leo Brereton was a nippy, energetic rover who liked to kick a goal, and did so with admirable frequency. He joined Carlton from Cohuna and was a consistent servant of the club in 72 VFL games between 1957 and 1962. His aggregate tally of 130 League goals included a club list topping total of 44 in 1960.

Towards the end of his time with the Blues he fell out of favour and did not achieve selection in the 1962 grand final team which lost to Essendon. In 1963 he was cleared to Nagambie before crossing to Manuka in the CANFL the following year where he spent a couple of seasons.
