Lou Riley was a handy half forward flanker with a keen goal sense. Between 1932 and 1934 he played 20 VFL games and scored 27 goals for an under-achieving Melbourne side. The 1935 season saw him at Collingwood where he not only got to play finals football for the first time but was a member of back to back Magpies premiership-winning teams in 1935-6. As is often the case, playing alongside better players brought out the best in him, and he was a highly serviceable performer for Collingwood over four seasons, adding 44 games and 60 goals to his respective career tallies.
