Boasting exceptional talent as a youngster, Mark Weideman made his senior league debut for West Adelaide in 1978, aged just 16. He went on to play 51 SANFL games and kick 39 goals for the club in two stints, separated by a 28 game, 34 goal spell with Collingwood from 1981 to 1984. His time with the Magpies was soured by persistent leg injuries which had the effect of reducing his pace, the one feature of his play that was not impressive to begin with.

Between 1986 and 1989 Weideman rounded off his career with 36 VFA games and 12 goals for Coburg. He played mostly as a follower during this phase of his career whereas he had previously been more commonly used as a forward. He was a member of the Lions’ 1988 and 1989 flag-winning teams.
