North Melbourne recruited Maurie Wood from St Arnaud and handed him his senior VFL debut in round 16 1963, the first of three appearances he was to make for the year. The following season saw him appear to consolidate his place in the team as he played 16 games, only for his career to stall in 1965-6 when he played mostly reserves football. To his immense credit, he persisted, and over the ensuing five seasons went on to establish himself as a key member of the side. Mostly used across half forward, he was elusive, with good goal sense. When he retired in 1971 he had played 97 games for the Kangas and scored 77 goals.
