Better known as a cricketer, Max Walker was also no mean footballer, playing six seasons with Melbourne after the Demons recruited him from Friends School, Hobart. Despite his somewhat ungainly gait, he was an effective ruckman and an excellent mark, and might conceivably have enjoyed a long and illustrious football career had he not decided to concentrate on cricket. Between 1967 and 1972 he played 85 VFL games and scored 23 goals for the Demons. Among his career highlights was playing in Melbourne’s 1971 night series premiership-winning team.
