Phil Ryan was a highly capable utility who spent time at Assumption College as a junior before playing for Yarrawonga. In 1970 he debuted with North Melbourne in the VFL, and soon established himself as a key member of the side. Between 1970 and 1976 he played 106 games for the Kangas and scored 56 goals. He was in the forward pocket in the 1974 grand final, which North lost to Richmond.
