A follower who could also play as a forward, Phil Ryan made 74 VFL appearances and scored 48 goals for Collingwood from 1941 to 1947, which was an unusually barren time for the Magpies. After departing the VFL scene Ryan captain-coached Montmorency to a Diamond Valley Football League premiership in 1951, a feat he duplicated three years later as a non-playing coach.
