Full forward Phil Smith joined West Perth in 1971 after managing just 12 VFL games and 17 goals for Geelong over the previous two seasons. He enjoyed an excellent debut season with the Cardinals, kicking 116 goals to top the club’s list. He also played in the winning grand final against East Perth. Smith went on to head West Perth’s goal kicking in both 1972 and 1973 with his tally of 84 in the latter season representing a league high.

The 1974 season saw Smith playing for Woodville and kicking 53 goals in 17 matches to top the ‘Peckers’ list. He returned to West Perth briefly in 1976 taking his final tally of games played for the club to 71 and the number of goals kicked to 291.

Phil Smith’s son, Brad, who played for Subiaco, won the Bernie Naylor Medal as top goal kicker in the WAFL in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008.
