Rex Ritchie was a talented defender who mainly lined up in the back pocket. Having played briefly for Preston in the VFA he joined VFL side South Melbourne in 1936, making his debut with the club in round seven of that year. After struggling initially to claim a regular spot in the side he became a first choice senior player from 1940. A year later he won South’s best and fairest award. From 1936 to 1942 and in 1946-7 he played 89 senior VFL games. He only kicked one career goal.
