Rohan Welsh’s promising football career with Carlton was effectively derailed when he fell over or off a fence whilst larking about with team mates on an end of season trip. His resultant knee injury was so severe it required two years of rehabilitation, after which he was unable to prove himself, and was de-listed. He had played 42 AFL games and kicked 59 goals between 1992 and 1997, although as previously intimated he did not play at all in 1995-6.
Prior to joining the Blues Welsh had starred for Dandenong in the VFA. In 1991, playing at full forward, he had topped the association’s goal kicking list with 84 goals, and contributed four goals to the Redlegs’ 15.15 to 14.12 grand final defeat of Werribee.
After being de-listed by Carlton Welsh played for Frankston in the VFL in 1998-9. He then embarked on a long, successful coaching career, largely with youngsters.
