A hefty but not overly tall ruckman (191cm, 105kg) who played with immense energy and determination, Russell Crow was a popular figure at Fitzroy during two separate stints in the 1960s and early 1970s. He hailed from Warracknabeal, where he worked as a sheep shearer, and he made his VFL debut with the Lions in 1960. Four years later he departed the VFL scene, only to be wooed back in 1968 for a second, longer stint. Fitzroy was a struggling side for most of Crow's career but he invariably struggled tirelessly and never lowered his head. When he retired in 1973 he had played a total of 158 VFL games, and kicked 114 goals.
