A tough, resolute big man who seemed to produce his best football when the chips were down, Tom Waye commenced his league career with Port Adelaide in 1929, and played 54 senior games for the club in three seasons. Playing as a follower, he was one of South Australia's best players during the 1930 Adelaide carnival, piquing the interest of several VFL clubs as a result.
In 1932, Waye transferred to Footscray along with his Magpie team mate Les Dayman, and he went on to give the club four seasons of useful service, during which he played 53 games and booted 43 goals. Both tallies would have been considerably higher had he not been sidelined so often with injury.
