John Seebohm was a consistently handy utility whose tally of 319 senior games for Glenelg between 1978 and 1992 has, to date, been bettered by only Peter Carey (448) and David Marshall (353). He joined the club from Mount Burr and, after initially struggling to win a regular place in the powerful Bay line-up, became a first choice senior player from 1982. Equally effective both ahead of and behind centre, he topped the Tigers’ goal-kicking list in 1987 with 77 goals.
Much of his best football, particularly later in his career, was played at centre half back, a position for which his fine kicking, strong marking, excellent anticipation skills and determined, purposeful approach made him ideally suited. He was at centre half back in the victorious Grand Final of 1986 against North Adelaide, having lined up at the goal-front against the same opposition in the decisive match of the previous year. Seebohm also had the misfortune to play in half a dozen losing Grand Finals during his career, and it says much about his attitude that he was almost invariably one of his team’s best players in such matches.
