After playing 25 SANFL games and kicking 18 goals for North Adelaide in 1981-2 Alan Stringer transferred to Glenelg. The ostensible reason for this was that Alan’s brother Wayne had fallen out with coach Mick Nunan and wanted to move on and, blood being thicker than water, Alan opted to follow suit. However, there was also an undeniable desire to play for a more successful club, and Glenelg during the Stringers’ time there was certainly that.
A half forward during the first part of his career Alan Stringer really came into his own after being shifted to the pivot, at his own request, in 1985. He went on to play in premiership teams both that year and the next when his form was a revelation. He continued to play excellent football in 1987 and 1988, finishing runner-up in the Bays best and fairest count in gthe lattder season whereupon, to almost universal dismay, he opted to retire. He had played 145 games and kicked 92 goals over the course of his six season stint at the club.
