Brian Boland worked his way up from the thirds at Richmond before making his senior VFL debut in 1950. A back pocket specialist who could also do a job in the pivot, he started 13 of his 50 appearances for the Tigers on the bench. He also played 57 reserves matches, including the 1954 grand final at that level in which Richmond accounted for Melbourne by 47 points. In 1955 he crossed to Hawthorn, where he added six games, before rounding off his playing career with 90 VFA games and 63 goals for Sandringam. Towards the end of his time with the Hawks he was offered the role of captain-coach of the North Wagga Football Club but he preferred to stay in Melbourne. While at the Zebras he served as their skipper in 1957 and won a club best and fairest award two years later.
