A gutsy, tenacious small man from Morwell, Bruce Williams struggled at first to hold down a place in Carlton’s line-up. However, once he got his foot in the door he became a key member of the team, with ruckman and Blues legend John Nicholls opining that Williams was one of the most underrated players of his era.
Williams’ most memorable game for Carlton was the 1962 grand final loss to Essendon, when he was many people’s choice as the Blues’ best after an all action performance which saw him claim three of his team’s eight goals for the match. From 1959 to 1964 he played 62 VFL games in the famous dark navy blue jumper, and kicked 56 goals.
