Recruited by Carlton from Tramways, Fred Johnson made his VFL debut in the opening round of the 1918 season. A highly useful defender, he had played 77 games for the Blues without registering a goal by the time he retired early in the 1924 season. (He did not play at all in 1923.) He was a Victorian interstate representative at the 1921 Perth carnival, as well as once the following season.
