After working his way through the ranks at Sturt Greg Whittlesea made his senior debut, aged seventeen, in 1981 before becoming a regular the following year. Much of his early football was played in defence where he was tough, honest and highly skilled. However, he was versatile and could play a number of other roles equally well. At his peak during the late eighties he was without doubt one of the finest South Australian footballers of his generation, winning two club best and fairest awards, the 1988 Magarey Medal, and selection in the All Australian team the same year.

In 1991, after 234 SANFL games and 88 goals for the Double Blues, Whittlesea crossed to Hawthorn, but found it hard to break into the team in what ended up being a Hawks premiership year. After playing just 4 games for the season he was de-listed and returned to Adelaide.
Sturt was a club in the throes of internal dissension in 1992 so Greg Whittlesea elected to throw in his lot with Glenelg in the hope that he could crown his career with participation in a premiership team. He did not get his wish, managing just 17 games and 1 goal over the final two seasons of his league career.
