One of many champions in Fitzroy's star-studded early VFL line-up, Harry Clarke was centreman in the Maroons' 1898-99 and 1904 premiership-winning teams. In both the 1899 defeat of South Melbourne and the 1904 victory over Carlton he was many observers' choice as the best player afield. Clarke also played in the losing flag deciders of 1900 and 1903. Highly skilled and consistent he would be a strong candidate for inclusion in any official Fitzroy Team of the Twentieth Century. He retired after the 1904 Grand Final, having played 91 VFL games in seven seasons.
