Ivan Baumgartner was a handy utility and defender who seldom if ever made the headlines, but could always be relied on to work hard in the service of his team. He started his league career in 1953 with Geelong, and he could be considered unfortunate to have been dropped from the Cats’ grand final team after having played in the previous week’s preliminary final. In 1954 he was a regular in the seniors, including two finals appearances.
Three rounds into the 1955 season, after 27 VFL games and three goals for Geelong, Baumgartner transferred to Melbourne, where he played just five senior games, but did well in the reserves, finishing second in that season’s Gardiner Medal count. He crossed to St Kilda in 1956 and added a final 16 games and one goal to his respective career tallies.
