Having played his early football in Western Australia and the ACT James Pyke was recruited by Norwood in 1985. Smooth moving and highly skilled, he played most of his football either as a half back flanker or wingman. After playing under age and reserves football with the Redlegs he made his league debut in 1986 en route to a career tally of 70 games up to the end of the 1990 season. Pyke was also a talented cricketer, representing South Australia as well as Australia at under 19s level. He is the son of Frank Pyke and the older brother of Don Pyke, both of whom are profiled above.
