Known as
Jim Phelan

Jim Phelan

Widely credited as the father of Australian football in Sydney (along with Harry Hedger), Jim Phelan migrated there from Hotham in the 1880s and soon became involved in promoting the Australian code. Such were his tireless efforts over the next 50 years that without him the game may well have died several times over. The Sydney league’s top individual award bears his name.
