East Fremantle recruited Peter Wilson from Lynwood and he made his league debut for the club in 1982. A strongly built, no frills ruck-rover, half forward or halfback he played a key role in helping the Sharks re-emerge as a WANFL power. In the 1985 Grand Final against Subiaco he was named on a half-forward flank, and contributed two goals to his team's eventual five-point win. Wilson made the first of his nine interstate appearances for Western Australia the same season, and a year later was included in the All Australian team. 

In 1987 he crossed to Richmond, rather than signing for the newly-created West Coast Eagles, and gave the Tigers solid service in 54 VFL games over what proved to be three mediocre seasons for the club. He also booted 40 goals. Moving back to the West in 1990, he joined the Eagles and produced the best and most consistent football of his career. His 117 games for 84 goals in six years with the club included sterling contributions to the club's Grand Final wins over Geelong in both 1992 and 1994. 

During his last season at West Coast in 1995, he played a final four games for East Fremantle, taking his final tally of games with that club to 102. Wilson coach Swan Districts in 1998 and 1999 with limited success.
