From Cheltenham, Ron Porta took a while to establish himself at Footscray, but once he did he became a mainstay of the side. Typically used as a half back flanker, he could also hold down a key position. After playing 63 games and scoring two goals for Footscray from 1953 to 1959 he crossed to South Melbourne, where he rounded off his playing career with 21 appearances but no further goals.
