Hobart-born Scott Direen had played 80 TFL games for New Norfolk when he was taken by Sydney at pick 95 in the 1992 National Draft. He was a consistently effective performer for the Swans, playing mainly in the back pocket, where his sublime delivery of the football often came under notice. However, somewhat surprisingly, after playing 52 AFL games and kicking 10 goals in five seasons, he was de-listed.

Norwood, one of the leading Australian football clubs outside the AFL, offered him a lifeline by procuring him ahead of the 1998 season. He repaid the club with some excellent football over the next seven seasons, whether playing as an on-baller or in defence. A club best and fairest in 2000, he was also selected to represent South Australia five times and made the Advertiser Team of the Year twice. The only significant honour to elude him was being part of a premiership team.

The Norwood phase of Scott Dineen’s playing career saw him play 114 SANFL games and kick 64 goals.
