Skilful and pacy, Stephen Carter seemed a ready-made AFL player when drafted by Port Adelaide ahead of the club’s ‘big time’ debut in 1997. However, he managed just 10 appearances for the year and was de-listed. Still obviously a player with plenty to offer he resumed with Port’s SANFL side and had played a total of 172 games and kicked 43 goals for them when he retired in 2003. (He had played his first SANFL game in 1991.) A premiership player with the Magpies on no fewer than five occasions, he played most of his football, including interstate games for South Australia, as a hard running, creative half back flanker.
