Tom Sutherland was a strongly built (183cm, 91kg) utility who played for three VFL clubs without ever really managing to establish himself at any of them. He hailed from Sunshine, from where he was recruited by Footscray in 1930. He spent five seasons with the ‘Scray but managed just 10 senior appearances and 12 goals. It was little better at his next port of call, St Kilda, where a four season stint netted him just 18 games and 18 goals. He finished his career with 19 games and 17 goals for Hawthorn between 1939 and 1941, after which he enlisted in the army. When discharged in 1945 he presumably felt that, at 34, his days of having an impact as a player were behind him. At any rate, he did not resume his football career.
