SOUTH MELBOURNE'S SUPERIORITY

GREAT FORWARD WORK

The game between University and South Melbourne played at the Melbourne ground proved a disappointment, as South ran away from the commencement, and were not seriously troubled throughout. The redeeming feature, however, was the grand display given by South Melbourne forwards, who got goal after goal from long distances and difficult angles—Stan Hiskins (5 goals), Freeman (4), and Morgan (2), being the chief contributors. South tried three new men—Morgan, a clever forward from Subiaco (W.A.); Hair, a rover from Brighton Juniors; and Bennett, a back from the closer settlement district of Rochester—and all have apparently made good. University's new men were Marks (Melbourne Grammar School), Houghton (Bairnsdale), and Rodriquez (Xavier College), and Bryan (Tasmania).

1st Quarter

South were too strong in the first quarter, and scored 5 goals to 1. Stan Hiskins got the first three, and Sloss and Freeman one each. Towards the close Rodriquez, for University, who is a speedy wing man, scored their only goal.

2nd Quarter

The second quarter was the best of the match. University let themselves go, and for most of the time held their own and registered goal for goal. Bryan opened the proceedings with a fine kick to Atkinson, who raised the flags. Freeman retaliated for South, and there were some fine bursts extending from goal to goal by either team, Stan Hiskins got his fourth goal, the outcome of a mark a long way out, and then University rallied and a nice exchange between Brake, Schrader, and Gibbs gave Doubleday a chance, which he missed. South then asserted themselves, playing the wing where Prince was in good form. Morgan beat the backs and scored, and he helped in the next by a timely pass to Stan Hiskins. University struggled on, and Rodriquez, breaking away from Rusich passed to Doubleday, who scored brilliantly. Brake, West, and Schrader put them in another good position, which, however, was spoilt by Belcher, who saved cleverly, and Tandy and Rusich furthered the ball to Morgan, who from a long way out hit the post. South's ruck, with Hair roving cleverly, was too strong a combination for their opponents, who appeared to be under-trained and were slower. But University stuck to their task, and a dash by Rodriguez, Park, and Doubleday brought their fourth goal. At half-time South were 9 goals 4 behinds to 4 goals 4 behinds.

3rd Quarter

The last half was South Melbourne's, for in the third quarter they allowed University only one behind, taking three goals and a host of small points. South's forwards fell away from grace for a time—perhaps because there was no need for them to exert themselves unduly.

4th Quarter

University struggled on gamely in the last quarter, but they were simply overrun, with South doing practically what they liked. The final scores were:—

South Melbourne, 14 goals 13 behinds (97 points).
University, 6 goals 8 behinds (44 points).

The winners played a fine concerted game, the most conspicuous being Hiskins, Bennett, Morgan, Belcher, Freeman, Sloss, Charge, Hair, and Bower; while for University, Brake, West, Woods, Doubleday, Rodriquez, Bryan, Kelly, and Atkinson stood out as the best players.
