Gary Parkes made his VFL debut with Essendon in 1970 and became a regular senior player from the following year. Fleet-footed, competent overhead and an accurate, long kick, he played many fine games for the Bombers over the course of a seven season career which saw him make 96 appearances and register 39 goals. At the end of the 1976 season he became embroiled in a pay dispute with the Essendon hierarchy which prompted him to seek a clearance to Richmond. When this was refused he opted to stand out of football for a year at the end of which the clearance was ratified. However, in two seasons with the Tigers he only managed 7 games and 6 goals.

Gary Parkes’ final port of call was Werribee where he played from 1981 until 1984. He also played representative football for the VFA in 1981 and won a club best and fairest award in 1983.
