One of the toughest VFL players of his era Hugh Dunbar loved the game's physical elements and was seldom deflected from his target, be it ball or man. Although known primarily as a ruckman he was versatile; for example, he played at centre half back in Melbourne's victorious challenge final team of 1926. Between 1922 and 1928 he played 97 VFL games for the Fuchsias and kicked 48 goals. A regular VFL interstate representative, when he left Melbourne he spent the 1929 season as playing coach of VFA club Brighton. He made a brief return to league ranks with St Kilda in 1930 adding a final 3 games and 1 goal to his career tallies. 

Dunbar later coached amateur club Ormond.
