After brief stints at Ganmain, Queanbeyan and Mangoplah-Cookardinia United Wayne Carroll commenced with South Melbourne in 1979. A handy forward capable of taking spectacular marks, he spent the better part of seven seasons with the Swans, playing 56 VFL games and scoring 57 goals. In 1984 he won the VFL Mark of the Year award.
