Brian Brown was a dependable defender who struggled with injury for much of his 51 game stint with Fitzroy from 1976 to 1979 and in 1981. The fact that he exceeded 50 games with the Roys though would come to be significant a couple of decades later as it enabled the Brisbane Lions to draft his son Jonathan, who would go on to be a bona fide champion, under the father-son rule.
In 1982 Brian Brown crossed to Essendon but only managed a couple of appearances for the year. He spent the 1983 season playing for VFA first division side Coburg (four games, six goals), before rounding off his playing career with Colac in the Hampden League, where he won a competition best and fairest award in 1987.
