In a thrilling and high scoring encounter in front of nearly 70,000 supporters, Hawthorn has managed to hold off an unyielding Carlton team by 4 points.
Hawthorn managed to lead by small margins at each break but were never sure of victory until the final siren sounded.
Sewell and Mitchell dominated in the midfield for Hawthorn while Judd and Murphy each gathered over 30 disposals. Though Franklin had a quiet match, he proved crucial in the last quarter when he scored a stunning goal outside the 50 from the boundary. In form spearheads Roughead and Fevola both sat on 8 goals when Armfield charged through the corridor and kicked into the fifty to a marked Fevola. Fevola took an excellent diving mark sending the blues supporters into crazed celebration. A confident looking Fevola walked in for a seemingly routine goal that would have given him his second nine goal haul for the season and Carlton a one point lead. To the disbelief of many, the pressure got to him and he struck the post, sending blues supporters back to their seats and handing Hawthorn a victory.
