Match Report

CARLTON'S CENTURY.

UNIVERSITY OUTCLASSED.

University were at home to Carlton on Saturday, on the M.C.C. Ground, and a fast game was expected, but the reverse happened, for only in the first quarter was there anything in the nature of a battle and after that the deluge! Carlton showed themselves to be a fast side, with dash and judgment, and they excelled in high marking. Williamson, Hanna, and Sharp reappeared with Carlton; and Burleigh, from Morwell, who was played at the last moment, justified the committee's selection, for he proved himself a sterling forward, who can mark and kick with rare judgment, and he scored two goals and hit the post twice. McGregor, who is training solidly, taking long runs, and finishing with mile sprints, will commence practice next Tuesday, as the committee state that they have every confidence in him, and are desirous that he should play.

1st Quarter

In the first quarter, both teams showed plenty of dash, but Carlton were more sure in passing, and played together better than University, who lacked cohesion. Burleigh, from a free kick, got Carlton's first goal. This had the effect of rousing University, and a forward move was well sustained, and finished with a clever goal, snapped by Park. Wells, on the forward fine for Carlton, was marking finely, and from a long place he scored Carlton's second goal. University were responsible for some clever work around the wings but McDonald, for Carlton, had charge of the centre, and repeatedly helped his forwards with long kicks. A succession of scrambles followed, until Clancy broke away, and passed to Burleigh, who gave Sharpe a chance right in front, which he converted. A rally by University, in which Woods, Rodriquez, and Don figured, ended by Park marking in a crowd of Carlton's backs, and scoring. A sweeping rush by Carlton followed, McDonald leading the assault. Wells marked finely, and passed to Burleigh, who tried a long place, and hit the post. The scores at the end of the quarter were:—Carlton, 3 goals 5 behinds; and University's 2 goals 3 behinds.

2nd Quarter

University were outplayed in the second quarter, scoring but 1 behind against Carlton's 6 goals. Wells was in great form for Carlton, and he was the means of quite a number of goals being scored. Sharpe kicked Carlton's fourth, and Gardiner got another after a fine run by Triplett. University tried to break away, but Hammond turned them, and Carlton bore down the centre, Gardiner missing from a few yards out. He made amends a few minutes later after Fisher and Valentine had brought the ball forwards, and scored. Hinman, Neale, Heron, and Doubleday were playing finely for University, but the combination of Carlton was too solid to battle successfully with.

3rd Quarter

The same state of things prevailed in the third quarter, Carlton dominating the play by their high marking and sure passing. Triplett got a goal quickly, and Wells followed with another from a long place. Daykin scored Carlton's ninth, and then the procession to University's goal ended, Woods and Doubleday working the ball forward to Park, who was thrown in front, and easy goal followed. Carlton allowed University no further latitude, for McDonald dominated the centre, and forwarded with a long kick to where Gardiner was waiting, and Carlton's tenth goal was got from a snap. Burleigh, whose high marking was a feature, had bad luck in again hitting the post. University's backs were helpless against the brilliant work of Wells, Fisher, and Burleigh, and goals were got with comparative ease. Fisher scored Carlton's eleventh goal, and then the finest piece of work for the day was seen when Burleigh made a sensational high mark, and followed with a long kick, which scored Carlton's twelfth goal, and he fully deserved the cheers which greeted his effort.

4th Quarter

All interest had faded when the last stage was entered upon, the only speculation being as to whether Carlton would reach the century. University battled gamely, but they were outclassed. Wells, after a fine mark, scored, and Carlton reached 100 points. University made a dying effort, Willis leading an attack, and Don, on the wing, forwarded to Park, who scored his fourth goal just before the bell. The final scores were:—

CARLTON, 13 goals 24 behinds (102 points).
UNIVERSITY, 4 goals 8 behinds (32 points).

Carlton played an even game, the most conspicuous being Burleigh (2 goals), Wells (3), Gardiner (3), Sharpe (2), Fisher, Triplett, McDonald, Deas, and Valentine. For University, Park (4 goals), Hinman, Kelly, Doubleday, Rodriquez, Willis, and Don were best.
