Match Report

A five-goal burst early in the third quarter secured Collingwood’s first win of 2012. Nathan Buckley recorded his first victory as Magpies coach as Richmond struggled at times to go with their more experienced opponents. It wasn’t a great game from a spectators' point of view, with both sides butchering a number of chances in front of goal. But a melee on the half-time siren involving every player on the ground added some spice to the contest. Magpies star Dale Thomas had a quiet first half, but he came alive in the third quarter, kicking three early goals and assisting with another. Acting Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury was classy around the stoppages as usual and Travis Cloke was too strong up forward. Magpies key defender Chris Tarrant was returning from injury, but he was substituted out of the match early with a calf complaint. For the Tigers, Nathan Foley suffered a broken nose, while enforcer Jake King carried a knee injury for most of the game before being being subbed off at three-quarter time. Richmond fans could only look ahead to the following weekend - and a date with Melbourne - as they continued to search for their first win of the season.

COACHES COMMENTS

Nathan Buckley (Coll): The first three quarters were exactly the way we wanted to go about it. I thought 'Reidy' (Ben Reid) led the charge with his performance on Riewoldt but Lachie Keeffe also stood up for a large proportion of the match.

Damien Hardwick (Rich): We've just got to get better in that situation. We went down in the contested-ball count in that (third) quarter quite significantly which sort of led to the blow out of the game in that period.

Umpires: Dalgleish, Stewart, Meredith
