Match Report

After a week of intense scrutiny and criticism from media and fans alike, Richmond has come out and answered them all in the best possible way, with a gritty win over Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night. The night didn't start well for the Tigers, with the Magpies flying out of the blocks to kick the first four goals of the match, but Richmond reeled them in to take a lead into the long break, and then held off a last-quarter challenge to kick the last three goals of the match to win by 15 points.

Tiger fans would have been expecting a strong response from Richmond after its round 19 match against GWS saw it record its lowest score since 1961, but there was nothing of the sort on display in the first 10 minutes, with Collingwood on fire and kicking four goals to nil through James Aish, Mason Cox twice, and Taylor Adams to lead 25-0 midway through the first term. Finally at the 16-miniye mark, some hard work from Trent Cotchin saw the ball go out to Bachar Houli, whose kick was mark by Ty Vickery, and Vickery's resultant goal calmed the nerves of players, coach and fans as the Tigers worked their way back into the match. They kicked the next two goals via Andrew Moore and Adam Marcon and, although Travis Cloke added one more for Collingwood, were within 14 points at the first break.

When play resumed in the second term, the balance of power and very much tilted Richmond's way. Ty Vickery, Shaun Grigg and Jack Riewoldt all registered majors, and the Tigers were suddenly ahead by six points midway through the term. Ben Crocker levelled the scores with a goal for the Pies at the 15-minute mark, after which the goals dried up. The only other major of the quarter went to Nathan Drummond, giving Richmond a one-goal edge at half time.

Scores were level again after four minutes of the third term, after a good tackle by Travis Varcoe on Dustin Martin saw him goal after the resultant free kick. Both sides then had 'radar' malfunctions, missing gettable shots before Martin found the big sticks to put Richmond ahead by seven after 16 minutes. Riewoldt stretched the lead to 13 with his second soon after but a career-first goal to Rupert Wills had the Pies back within six before another from Riewoldt had the Tigers 12 points clear at the last change.

Collingwood challenged strongly in the early stages of the final term, and when skipper Scott Pendlebury and Jesse White both goaled within the first five minutes, momentum appeared to be with the Magpies. Richmond responded with a roving goal to Daniel Rioli but a mark and goal to Aish had scores tied once more midway through the quarter. The Pies added to further behinds to take a narrow lead but the Tigers dug deep and finished off strongly, with a Brandon Ellis goal restoring a Richmond lead and follow-up majors from Sam Lloyd and Riewoldt killing off the Collingwood challenge and giving the Tigers a gutsy win.

Dustin Martin led from the front for the Tigers, with 34 possessions and four marks, while Collingwood's best included Steele Sidebottom, who took eight marks and gave off 22 disposals.

While both sides are out of finals contention, they will be looking to finish off the year on a positive note. The Tigers will face Geelong, St Kilda and Sydney too see out the season, while Collingwood's last three matches will take in the Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast and Hawthorn.
