Match Report

Richmond gave its chances of a finals berth for the first time in 11 years a huge boost by smashing Hawthorn by 62 points. It was the most complete Tigers performance since Damien Hardwick took over as coach in 2010. After surviving a horror draw to open the season, the Tigers were well placed at 4-5 for an assault on the finals. The result was never in doubt as Richmond’s work ethic and frenetic attack on the ball proved too much for the struggling Hawks. Billed as premiership favourites at the beginning of the season, the loss left Hawthorn clinging to a spot in the top eight at 5-4. Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric, who was recruited from Adelaide at the end of 2011, was dominant all day and provided his midfielders with quality ball use. Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt, who had been criticised for his underwhelming performances in the early part of the season, kicked six goals.

COACHES COMMENTS
Damien Hardwick (Rich): I thought the way we hunted the ball was really impressive. We were playing against a side that's very, very good in that area; I think they were No.3 overall in contested possession differential. To win against a side like that in that sort of manner when I thought we hunted the ball really well, especially inside 50, I thought was good also.

Alastair Clarkson (Haw): We had 22 blokes out there today that we thought could get us the win against Richmond. We have players we could consider coming back onto the side but we just didn't have enough effort of consistency and endeavour across the game.

Umpires: Donlon, Kamolins, Findlay
