Match Report

Many viewed this as a potential Grand Final preview, and it more than lived up to the hype. Almost 63,000 mainly Collingwood fans packed the MCG on a Saturday evening; nearly everything about the contest felt like a final. But it was the Magpies that narrowly came out on top. The Magpies flew out of the blocks, but West Coast was never going to lie down easily. The Eagles managed to hit the lead at half time and hit the front in the last quarter after the Magpies took a 15-point lead into three-quarter time. It was a team performance from the Eagles, while Collingwood had an array of stars that were standouts. Key forward Travis Cloke kicked five goals – his best return for 2012 to date – while Dayne Beams continued his stunning breakout season to finish with 34 possessions and kick three clutch goals. Dane Swan went about his business as usual with a lazy 38-possession game. Although the Eagles narrowly went down, many thought they could take solace from getting so close to the Magpies – who won a ninth straight game – at their MCG cauldron.

COACHES COMMENTS
Nathan Buckley (Coll): I don't think we were great at being able to halt momentum when the Eagles had it, and, to be honest, we might not have maximised ours. It was a bit of an arm-wrestle, and ultimately one that we're very happy to get the result in.

John Worsfold (WC): We're a better team than we were this time last year. We are stronger as a group. (But) we have to get better. We want to be one of the elite teams in the competition and to do that, we still think we've got to improve.

Umpires: Rosebury, Stevic, Findlay
