Match Report

North Melbourne has overcome GWS and some unusual tactics employed by Giants coach Kevin Sheedy to record a big 86-point win at Docklands stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Kangaroos blew the Giants away with an eight-goal-to-one first quarter, and in the face of the onslaught, GWS coach Kevin Sheedy threw extra numbers into defence to try and stem the flow. The move brought some success in the second term, with the Giants scoring four goals and restricting North Melbourne to four also.

Sheedy then took the tactic even further in the second half, and at most stages after the long break the Giants had an amazing 10 players line up in defence. It was ultimately an unsuccessful ploy, as although North Melbourne only scored 7.10 in the second half, Greater Western Sydney could only cobble together 1.5. Sheedy's tactics brought criticism from some sections of the footballing fraternity after the match.

North's best were Lachie Hansen (24 possessions), Scott Thompson (28 touches) and veteran Brent Harvey, who kicked 3.2 and had 24 disposals. GWS were well served by co-captain Tom Scully (20 disposals), Adam Treloar (24 possessions) and Toby Greene (25 disposals).

Despite the win the Kangaroos are still three games outside of the eight with little hope of finals action. They will Richmond, Brisbane, Carlton and Melbourne over the next four weeks. The Giants will give themselves some hope of recording their first victory when they take on the embattled Western Bulldogs at Manuka Oval next Saturday.
