Match Report

The Western Bulldogs have consolidated sixth place on the ladder and further strengthened its credentials as a worthy final contender with a hard-fought 18-point win over Collingwood at Docklands on Sunday. In an entertaining match, the Dogs regained the free-flowing style it had lacked in recent weeks, and kicked 15 goals to condemn the Magpies to a fifth loss in a row and send them tumbling down to 11th place on the ladder.

Collingwood made a lightning fast start, with a free kick at the opening bounce leading to a centre clearance and Scott Pendlebury goaling on the run after just 20 seconds. The Dogs settled down after that and after a registering a couple of behinds got their first through skipper Bob Murphy who unusually started up forward. Marcus Bontempelli and Tory Dickson added goals over the next six minutes to give the Dogs an 11-point lead. Free flowing footy saw each side add another two majors before the siren and at the first break it was the Western Bulldogs leading by 13.

A mark and goal to Heath Grundy saw Collingwood cut the margin back to seven points early in the second term, but the Dogs responded with two, one each to Luke Dahlhaus and Dickson - playing his 50th match - saw the Bulldogs take a game-high 18-point lead at the six-minute mark. Levi Greenwood pulled one back for the Pies but Lachie Hunter marked and goaled to put the Dogs 17 points clear after 17 minutes. Goals to Darcy Moore and Brodie Grundy saw Collingwood close to within five points but a mark and goal to Jack Redpath gave the Western Bulldogs an 11-point half-time buffer.

The Dogs dominated the early stages of the third term but could not translate that to scoreboard pressure, registering only two behinds before Jack Stringer and Dickson kicked two in two minutes between them. The Bulldogs then led by 25 points, a margin more reflective of the difference between the two sides in general play. Both sides added a further two goals each for the term, with Magpie Darcy Moore - son of dual Brownlow Medallist Peter - getting his second and third in just his third AFL game. At the last change, the Bulldogs led by 26.

Three minutes into the last term, Moore added his fourth after a free kick, and when Jesse White added another after a free kick and a 50-metre penalty, Collingwood was within 16 points and back in the match. Steele Sidebottom kicked another major four minutes later and the Bulldogs were looking wobbly, leading by just 11 points. But a two goals in a minute via Mitch Wallis and Bailey Dale eased all nerves as the Dogs lead stretched back out to 24. A fifth goal to Moore was mere consolation and the Western Bulldogs held on for an important win.

Best for the Dogs included Hunter (32 touches, 10 marks) and Matthew Boyd (38 disposals, 12 marks), while Collingwood's Sidebottom (33 possessions, eight marks) and Moore (five goals) had fine games.

The Dogs have a winnable game against Essendon next Sunday and a top-four berth is not out of the question for a side written off by most at the beginning of the season. Collingwood will attempt to arrest its slump with a win over Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday.
